Description

Our tour begins at the New Bridge, a perfect starting point to introduce the charm of Berat’s two iconic neighborhoods, Mangalem and Gorica, separated by the Osum River and connected by the historic Gorica Bridge, which we’ll talk about in more detail.

From there, we’ll walk through the cobbled streets of the city, surrounded by Ottoman-style architecture, and visit two important religious landmarks that face each other: the Orthodox Cathedral and the Lead Mosque, a beautiful symbol of interfaith harmony in Berat.
As we head toward the castle, we’ll first pass by the King’s Mosque and the Halveti Tekke, two spiritual landmarks standing side by side, offering a serene and reflective atmosphere.

The uphill walk to the castle takes about 20–30 minutes. Once inside, we’ll explore true historical gems: the Church of the Holy Trinity, the White Mosque, the Acropolis, the Red Mosque, and of course, Tabja, the castle’s famous viewpoint with a breathtaking panorama over the city.

Insight Berat

Xhulja is such a sweet and informable guide! Although I had already stayed overnight within the Castle walls, she showed me all the nooks, architecture and streets and especially the views! Whilst excellently educating me on the history of Albania, we explored all of the Berat Castle and the rest if the city from above. She mixed historic facts with family anecdotes of her grandparents and childhood memories of her own. Born and raised in Berat, she could not have made my visit to Berat more memorable. Highly recommended!

Berat free tour

The guide gave excellent information and answered all our questions. She adapted herself to our needs, since we had to buy food in the city before going to the castle. She reassured me in front of a dog at which an angry man was throwing stones. We were only the two of us so it was like a private tour. It could not have been better.

Great intro to Berat!

We felt very lucky to end up on a private tour with Xhulja, who gave us some helpful context about Albania and Berat to start near the lower neighborhoods, then took us through the ethnographic museum and up to the castle. It was a wonderful chance to ask questions and learn about modern Albanian culture from someone who grew up in Berat, as well as the many centuries of history.
