Description

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a new style emerged, brought about by creative artists; it represented a return to nature, with curved forms and asymmetry…

In Germany it is known as ‘Jugendstil’, in France as ‘Art Nouveau’: more decoration, ornamentation and curves. Unfortunately, this style’s lifespan was all too short; some of the reasons for this were the First World War and the high costs involved.

Darmstadt offers ‘Mathildenhohe’ as a setting to experience this style; a prince brought together a number of artists for an exhibition, and the artists built distinctive houses. I shall accompany you so that we may experience together this visual sensuality, the water and the gardens…

Sights to see: the Wedding Tower, the Ernst Ludwig Chapel, Haus Behrens, Haus Glückert, the Russian Chapel…
But first, we’ll meet in the city centre (Luisenplatz) and take the tram to see the Waldspirale: a piece of architecture in the style of ‘Antonie Gaudi’ in Darmstadt.

Includes

  • Hochzeitsturm
  • Haus Behrens, Alexandraweg 17
  • Orthodox Church of St. Mary Magdalene Darmstadt
  • Waldspirale
  • Ernst-Ludwig Haus
