Description

Our journey begins with Primo de Rivera's dictatorship, followed by the forward-thinking Second Spanish Republic, during which Madrid emerged as an intellectual hub and battleground for women's suffrage, led by Clara Campoamor. The narrative darkens with the upcoming Spanish Civil War, making Madrid a symbol of anti-fascist resistance, heavily documented by figures like Ernest Hemingway.

Following the war came the long Franco dictatorship, and after his death, Madrid became the heart of Spain's transition to democracy. The 1980s brought "La Movida Madrileña," a cultural explosion with Madrid at its core. It symbolized newfound freedom that influenced all forms of art and nightlife, embodied by figures like Pedro Almodóvar.

Join us to explore Madrid's dramatic century landmarks and hidden stories!

During the tour, we will see and discuss the following:
The Royal Palace
Plaza España
Gran Via & Callao
Monument to Clara Campoamor
Convent of las Comendadoras de Santiago
Dos de Mayo Square

Highly recommend this tour!

We don't usually do guided tours, but decided we wanted the insights of a local to help us understand more about the context and impact of the civil war in Madrid and the Franco era. So glad we joined Daniel's tour! He was so informative, and so passionate about the subject matter, as well as being good fun. Daniel was happy to answer the many questions we all put to him. The 2.5 hours we spent with Daniel and the small but engaged group was a highlight of our time in Madrid.

Very enjoyable, interesting and informative

Daniel provided us both with a very enjoyable informative and interesting tour. The time fled by in his excellent company. Pity Daniel was not running any more tours till Friday ????????

Exactly what we were looking for

My daughter wanted to find a tour that would show us the Madrid of the Civil War. This tour came closer to anything else we found. It covered a lot content and a lot of Madrid in a concise 2 hours. While it covered Madrid inthe 20th century that essentially means the time leading up to the Civil War, the war and the aftermath of the war. The guide knew a lot and clearly liked talking about and sharing history. We were a small group but he was still enthusiastic.

Must do tour!

Duarte was an exceptionally good guide. He got the perfect line between lots of information and presenting them in a digestible way. I highly recommend this tour for everyone interested in the more „forgotten“ history of Spain.

super interesting

The tour was very interesting and the guide was highly motivated. He was talking for 4h instead of 2h but it was not boring though ????

Alfred Endres · June 2025

Fun, well documented and educational

Very interesting information with Duarte. He is an excellent public speaker, clear and confident. I recommend his tour 100%.
