Description

You will hear how the Inns of Court in this small area of London, almost by accident, fostered the development of English Common Law, which spread around the world to the USA, India, Pakistan, Africa, and Australia. People who changed the world worked, lived, entertained, and were educated in the Medieval and Elizabethan Inns:

- Seven of the signatories to the American Declaration of Independence
- Muhammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan, who owned 200 bespoke (made-to-measure) suits.
- Mahatma Gandhi, who had to promise his mother that he would abstain from meat, alcohol, and women before he could enroll in the Inner Temple.
- Helena Normanton, the first woman to enroll to become a barrister (1919), had to eat 70 dinners in Middle Temple to qualify as a lawyer
- Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake are members of the Middle Temple.
- Sir William Blackstone, who influenced common and criminal law in the USA and British Commonwealth, stated: “It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer.”

The oldest building on the tour is the Knights Templar Church, built in 1162 AD, which was one of the bases for King John during the Magna Carta negotiations.

Good use of three hours!

Keith was an excellent guide - very knowledgeable, keeping the tour engaging throughout. We certainly know a lot more about the history of the legal system in the UK.

Great Guide

We had a wonderful experience with the Lawyers London Tour. The tour was fascinating, informative, and very well organised. Keith Eyles was an excellent guide—friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about London’s history. His stories and insights brought the city to life and made the tour feel much more personal than simply visiting the landmarks on your own. Keith kept the tour engaging from start to finish, combining fascinating facts with entertaining anecdotes and a great sense of humour. It was a brilliant way to see London from a different perspective and discover stories we would probably have missed on my own. We would definitely recommend the Lawyer London Tour to anyone visiting London who wants to explore its famous landmarks while gaining a deeper appreciation of the city’s rich history and character.

A genuinely interesting tour of London’s legal quarter

Keith Eyles our guide is a retired barrister and the ideal guide for this tour. He is extremely knowledgeable and interesting, with an encyclopaedic memory for dates, people and events that he kept us hooked throughout the 3 hour tour of legal London, taking us ‘behind the scenes’ to areas that the general public wouldn’t normally visit, such as the quiet squares of the Inns of Court, which are steeped in history and full or architectural interest. I would highly recommend this tour and plan to bring a group with me next time.

Lawyers' London Tour: the Royal Courts of Justice & Inns of Cour

Our tour with Keith was absolutely worthwhile: 3 h of competent information and interesting insight by a ( retired) barrister. We are glad having selected this tour.

Super informative tour

We really enjoyed our tour. Keith really knows his stuff. It was interesting and understandable for me who knows next to nothing about the law! It was great to go inside the Royal Courts and to see a live trial, as well as to explore the Inns of Court which are right under your nose, but you'd never know. FYI the tour took three hours and there wasn't much opportunity to sit down!
