Description

We will meet in Castlegate alongside Lady's Bridge, Sheffield's oldest bridge. This is the birthplace of the city. From a clearing in the woods where two great rivers, The Don and The Sheaf, meet, Sheffield grew to become the UK's 4th largest city and to be known around the world as the Steel City.

We'll reimagine Sheffield Castle, the prison of Mary Queen of Scots, and learn of its destruction. We'll meander through the old town, along its still cobbled streets, visiting sites where criminals were active, police officers killed on duty, chartists conspired, and razor gangs battled.

Who was the chartist leader of the Sheffield Uprising, and how is he commemorated in the city today? Who was Charlie Peace, and why was he England's most wanted man with waxwork effigy displayed in London's Madame Tussauds and had film and stage plays written about his life? Why was Sheffield known as 'Little Chicago' during the 1920s, and what exactly was the 'Rhino Whip' affair in 1963 that caused the then Chief Constable to resign? All of this and more will be explored, and the tour concludes in the Peace Gardens, today's Heart of the City.

Sheffield Free Walking Tour

Kevin was awesome. He was very knowledgeable of Sheffield’s history. How he presented the history was easy to follow. He answered all our questions. We especially enjoyed how he personalized the tour with his career as a police officer. So interesting! Would highly recommend!!!

A Fascinating Tour of Gangs and Policing

The tour focused on the city’s criminal history, particularly the gang-related violence that took place more than a century ago, and it was a genuinely fascinating experience. What made the tour stand out was the guide himself—a former police officer with an impressive depth of knowledge about both local history and the evolution of policing in the area. His background really added credibility and insight to the stories he told. Rather than just recounting dramatic crimes, he explained how policing worked at the time, how gangs operated in Sheffield’s industrial districts, and how law enforcement gradually adapted to deal with them. A lot of the tour centred on the violent gang conflicts that plagued parts of the city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Hearing about these incidents while standing in the streets where they happened gave the stories a real sense of place. The guide did an excellent job of explaining the wider social context as well—how Sheffield’s rapid industrial growth, crowded neighbourhoods, and working conditions all contributed to the rise of organised gangs. His experience as a former policeman also meant he could compare historical policing methods with modern ones, which was a really interesting angle I hadn’t expected from a history tour. It added an extra layer to the stories and made the discussion feel more grounded and informative rather than sensationalised. The walk itself was well-paced, with plenty of opportunities to stop, ask questions, and take in parts of the city you might otherwise walk past without noticing. Even if you’re familiar with Sheffield, you’ll likely come away with a completely new perspective on its past. Overall, it was an engaging and thoughtful tour that blended true crime, social history, and the development of policing. I’d highly recommend it to anyone interested in Sheffield’s history or looking for a walking tour that offers something a bit different from the usual city highlights.
