Description

Bolzano is one of the most fascinating border cities in Europe. For thousands of years, merchants, pilgrims, and migrants crossed the Alps here, but the same geography that brought wealth and opportunity also made South Tyrol one of the continent's most contested regions.

This walking tour follows Bolzano's story from the time of Ötzi through the medieval trading fairs, the Habsburg Empire, Italian unification, Fascist Italianisation and the Second World War, before ending with the remarkable autonomy model that transformed a once-divided region into one of Europe's most prosperous.

Highlights:
- Walk through the remarkably preserved medieval arcades of Laubengasse.
- Learn how language and identity have shaped everyday life for centuries.
- Explore the dramatic changes brought by Fascism in the 1920s.
- Understand the difficult choices faced by South Tyroleans during the Second World War.
- Discover how South Tyrol became a model for minority rights and coexistence.

Distance: Approximately 2 km.

Great!

I had a fantastic time on the free walking tour in Bolzano today! Our guide, Marcus, was great—friendly, knowledgeable, and, most importantly, blessed with a good sense of humour! He made the history of Bolzano interesting without making us feel like we were trapped in a history lecture. There were plenty of laughs along the way, and Marcus had a great way of keeping everyone engaged while showing us around this beautiful city. Highly recommended—great tour, great stories, and a great guide. Thanks, Marcus!

Marcus had extensive knowledge about the region and the history of Bolzano. We had a wonderful time walking around the city and he was very accommodating making sure we stayed in the shade as much as possible with our baby. We would recommend Marcus to anyone!
