Description

Come join this free walking tour through Xochimilco, the oldest neighborhood in Oaxaca City.

This tour offers a quiet escape from the bustling downtown while getting in touch with Oaxacan traditions such as chocolate, looms and colonial architecure.

What you'll see: History & engineering: Marvel at the 18th-century aqueduct built by Dominican priests. Its stone arches now frame colorful streets, colonial homes, and even a comedy Hollywood film set.

*Flavors and tradition: Did you know chocolate was invented in Mexico?
The highlight of the tour: Corazón de Cacao is a local chocolate workshop run by a family. You'll get to know them, some of their stories and also you'll have a taste of the different chocolate flavors they make!

*Living traditions: Step into a loom workshop that preserves Oaxaca’s textile heritage and his owner, Don Chepe.

We’ll also visit the neighborhood church and cemetery, the heart of the Day of the Death traditions.

*Art & culture: Admire stunning murals by local artists, a vibrant scene that rivals the famous street art of Jalatlaco.

Don’t miss the chance to experience a side of Oaxaca where ancient history and modern creativity live side by side

Love Jules and the tour!

I would recommend this tour: street art, chocolate (who doesn't like some form of chocolate?), loom-made works, the opportunity to buy meaningful souvenirs...and Jules clearly loves this area and has a deep knowledge of what he is speaking of. Loved it!

Incredible local arts, history and culture tour

Carlos was an incredible tour guide with a lot of knowledge on the evolution and history of different forms of art in Xochimilco, along with in depth detail of the countless murals in Jalatlaco. We visited traditional tin/silver and textile artist’s workshops, along with a lovely chocolate cafe. He was friendly and entertaining. Felt nice to be out of the hustle and bustle wandering through beautiful, colourful quiet streets.

Excellent Tour

Carlos was great. He is so passionate and knowledgeable about the local area, traditions and art. It was really interesting to learn about the murals and the stories depicted in them. Carlos wqa very easy to talk to and answered any questions we had. Really enjoyed the tour and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. The chocolate tasting at the end perfectly finished the tour.
