Description

Hi! I'm José, a certified regional guide from Portugal, a university graduate, and a proud resident of Coimbra for over 20 years!

To make it easier to understand the city's history, I use supporting materials such as photos and diagrams. And at the end, we'll receive a handy sheet with the city's useful information.

We'll start in the heart of downtown, at Portage Square. Near the river, you'll get to know the town's patron saint and learn about its history. Then we'll head downtown past what was once the city's main entrance, the Almedina Gate, explore St. James Church and the Santa Cruz Church (once part of a big monastery).

Halfway through the tour, we'll pass by the Old Cathedral, which has a strong relationship with academic traditions.

We'll pass by the Machado de Castro courtyard by the New Cathedral, and the University. Along the way, I'll share insights into the city's history, its people, academic traditions, and practical tips to maximize your Coimbra experience.

Halfway we will do a technical stop for toilets where you can also grab a coffe inside an hidden gem (except on weekends)

Let's make your Coimbra exploration truly memorable.

Tour of Coimbra

Jose’ gave a terrific tour, a good mix of history and more contemporary life in Coimbra. Jose is professional and includes his personal touch and humor, enjoyed it very much and recommend his tour.

Great tour with Jose!

The guided tour with Jose was highly recommended. Jose is a very well-organised and professional guide who places great importance on helping his participants get to know Coimbra better. He does this in a relaxed and humorous manner, which helps to create a good atmosphere within the group. He answers questions confidently and strikes a good balance between historical background and current issues affecting the city. I would book a city tour with him again in a heartbeat.

Great tour, great guide!

We were lucky to choose Jose's 2.5-hour free walking tour for our city tour. He has lived in Coimbra for 20 years and knows the city inside out. He also had genuine stories about the university and explained some of its traditions, for example the origin of the academic dress. This felt especially authentic, since he is a graduate of the University of Coimbra himself. For those who have never done a free walking tour: the tour isn't really "free". At the end, everyone pays what they felt the tour was worth. I've joined many free walking tours, and this is a common misunderstanding, which is completely understandable. The tour was in English and easy to follow at all times. Thanks to the audio devices Jose provides, you can stop for a photo here and there and still keep listening to his stories. The walking pace suits all ages. We had a toddler with us and had no trouble keeping up. We can wholeheartedly recommend Jose.
