Description

Explore Belgrade’s modern history through the lens of Yugoslavia, socialism, and urban transformation. Starting at Terazije, this tour takes you past the Old and New Royal Palaces, the Serbian Parliament. Also, we pass through Tašmajdan Park, once a limestone quarry, then a World War II bombing site, and now a peaceful urban park.

We reflect on science and symbolism at the Nikola Tesla Museum. While this isn’t a stop for a full interior visit during the walking tour, we pause to reflect on Tesla’s legacy .As we enter the Vračar district, we approach one of the most monumental symbols of modern Serbia — the Slavija Square. Once a quiet roundabout, Slavija became a chaotic urban hub during the 20th century, especially under socialist modernization projects.. The tour ends at the monumental Church of Saint Sava, where religion, nationalism, and ideology intersect.

Learn how Belgrade grew from a royal capital to a socialist hub, and how Tito’s legacy still shapes the city. This tour is perfect for anyone interested in Yugoslavia, Cold War politics, architecture, and the transformation of everyday life in the 20th century.

A pluralistic tour that has it all!

Thank you very much for this extremely interesting tour about Yugoslavia and Serbia history. Guide was very informative, eager to answer any questions or offer insights in the things that I asked him. What I liked in this tour was it's pluralism. From history about the various states that Serbia as a country has been and faced, to humourous legendary urban stories (the Belgrade Phantom) to tour around few of the most important landmarks and churches of the city (pluralism in its full). What I liked the most it was that it combines all those elements together, so you go to a tour about modern history but at the same time you see few of the "basics" of the city Thank you very much!

Getting to know Belgrade

Nikola is a super guide, extremely knowledgeable and organised, who knows how to engage the audience with his narrative and his sense of humour. He even made a point of interacting individually with each participant during the tour, and sent WhatsApp messages before and after it. The only detail I regret is that the tour offered was in fact The Old Town Tour and not the Modern History I had booked, but Nikola informed me of this change the night before and I agreed to it.
