Description

In the 15th century, two decisive events took place in Balat-Fener: the Ottoman conquest of the city and the subsequent resettlement of its Christian inhabitants outside the city walls, and, a few years later, the expulsion of the Jews from the Iberian Peninsula. These two events, so far apart in time, laid the foundation for what is now Istanbul’s most bohemian and vibrant neighborhood.

We’ll wander its steeply sloping streets, marvel at the colors that have become its hallmark, and learn a little more about the history of other religions and peoples who were able to live together in harmony for centuries—and who left their lasting legacy in these streets.

Notes: Reservations for 6 or more people—whether in a single booking or multiple bookings—require payment of €10 per participant.

Recommendations: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for entering Christian places of worship.

Can is an excellent guide!

This section of town is colorful, vibrant, full of local people and fascinating shops. Can knew his way around and was patient and kind. Highly recommended.

Interesting insights into the diversity of the city

This was a tour we took a few days into our time in Istanbul, so we'd got our bearings a bit and were interested in diving a bit deeper. This tour was a fascinating overview of how different communities have been part of Istanbul's history. Our guide also helped us to arrange a visit to one of the beautiful synagogues later in our trip, which was a stand-out experience of our time in the city. Thank you!
