Description

Cholon is Saigon’s heavy Chinatown district. It’s a great place to spend at least half a day. It’s hard to believe, but Cholon is even more chaotic than downtown Saigon, with a distinctly Chinese character. As downtown Saigon is increasingly overwhelmed by concrete and high-rise towers, we reckon Cholon might be the best place to get a sense of the old, unique energy of the city.

This place is now a significant commercial center for the Chinese in Ho Chi Minh City, which still preserves the precious values of culture, religion, and architecture dating back thousands of years. The pipe-shaped tiled roofs in Chinatown streets combined with typical Chinese architecture feature a unique classic beauty.

Aside from wandering the streets of Chinatown, you can also experience local flavors through a mini food trip! Drink the famous Vietnamese coffee, have a plate of Chinese duck soup noodles, and enjoy a hearty dumpling and sweet soup.

Interesting, Knowledgeable and Fun

We two people were taken on easy walk through the Chinese quarter of Saigon. We had visitied Saigon previously and done other walking tours so were looking for something different. Our tour guide, Long, was knowledgeable, entertaining and superbly helpful, enlightening us about the different aspects of this part of the city from ancient culture to quirky commerce and yummy food to boot. Thank you Long for a valuable and enjoyable tour that we would recommend to anyone seeking a different angle to HCMC.
